Lesson’s Seedeater breeds in northernmost South America, and moves south across Amazonia between December and June.

Lesson’s Seedeater is uncommon to fairly common, and is usually found in shrubby habitats in close proximity to water.Molecular evidence suggests that genus should be placed in the tanager family (Thraupidae).
